CPAs and AI: Empowering the profession’s future

Uncover how artificial intelligence (AI) can help CPAs anticipate future needs with this three-part series developed in collaboration with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the landscape of the CPA profession, affecting financial systems, auditing processes and decision-making frameworks. This presents an opportunity for CPAs, who fall at the intersection of technological innovation and responsible AI governance to play a role in building trust and transparency in these systems. Often in executive leadership roles, CPAs are stewards of financial integrity and can lead the use of AI across a broad spectrum of business and operational applications. These papers are intended to empower CPAs, regardless of background or specialization, to effectively navigate the rapid evolution of AI and the challenges in its development and adoption.

CPA Canada advocates for the responsible adoption and governance of AI systems to advance AI implementation across Canada. Our focuses include:

  • educating CPAs and the broader public on the responsible understanding and use of the technology
  • understanding and promoting the role that CPAs and assurance can play in responsibly leveraging and building trust in AI systems
  • contributing to and supporting the development of regulations and governance practices that support ethical, responsible, and safe use of AI

CPA Canada’s 2025 pre-budget submission suggested new measures to speed up AI adoption and made a strong case for fostering a domestic ecosystem to remain self-reliant. Our briefing letter submitted to the Standing Committee on Industry and Technology studying Bill C-27 (Part 3: AI and Data Act) highlighted considerations for how assurance should be applied to the AI supply chain, including adequate consideration around the issues of accountability, transparency, and explainability of AI systems, as well as the intersection with privacy and cybersecurity.

As the profession leverages AI to improve productivity, CPA Canada will ensure CPAs maintain a competitive edge through professional development and learning and are well-positioned to be at the forefront of Canada’s AI transformation.
